The Mighty Quinn, illustrated by Katie and Aaron DeYoe

The Mighty Quinn

by Robyn Parnell
illustrated by Katie and Aaron DeYoe

Ages 8 & up
Quinn Andrews-Lee feels anything but mighty, and faces a dismal school year. His little sister outshines him athletically and socially, and he yearns for a service award his peers disdain. Not to mention charismatic bigot Matt Barker's goal in life is to torment Quinn and lure his friends to the dark side. When Quinn reports an act of vandalism, he finds himself accused of injuring Matt. Neally Standwell, a free-spirited new kid in Quinn's class, helps Quinn deduce who hurt Matt, but Matt would probably die—and would definitely lie—before admitting the truth. Through events both comical and poignant, Quinn and Neally solve the right mystery just as everything seems to go wrong and thwart a bully without becoming one in turn. And at the end of the day, the fabled ability to belch the entire alphabet might very possibly trump any award ever presented at Turner Creek School.

BIOGRAPHY
Katie and Aaron DeYoe met while studying graphic design at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Though they are both full-time graphic designers, they spend most of their free time drawing, doodling, painting and printing. REVIEW

"As a children’s librarian and storyteller, I’m always on the lookout for picture books which tell well for my preschool storytimes.  I was so pleased with Stacy Raye Waibel’s newest book, Rudy O’Tooty.  The story sprightly tells of little poodle Rudy’s trip with his “parents” to the local Irish Fair, and his jolly time with all the dancing and celebration of Irish heritage.  Michelle Gruebele’s lively and festive artwork matches little Rudy’s exuberant tale of this memorable day.  It fit perfectly with a green-themed storytime, invoking the merry mood of St. Patrick’s Day.  Needless to say, it comes highly recommended!"

Rudy's Incredible Kidney Machine - Stacy Raye Waibel

Rudy's Incredible Kidney Machine

by Stacy Raye Waibel

Review by Laura Weber, National Kidney Foundation Patient & Family Council Executive Committee

Stacy uses a very child friendly character, Rudy the dog, to introduce her reader to kidney failure. I thought it was good that she started with Rudy becoming symptomatic with the fatigue common to End Stage Renal Disease.  As Rudy goes to the doctor, the author uses this occasion to give a very good and child age appropriate basic description of what the kidneys are and what their function is “to clean our blood” along with a very basic diagram on the kidneys in relationship to the major internal organs. As the book progresses, Rudy goes to dialysis with a great illustration of the little dog hooked up to the dialysis machine with a rudimentary explanation of what dialysis does and what it is like. I thought it was great that the book addresses what kinds of food could or couldn’t be eaten, or eaten in moderation, and fluid restrictions. The book seems to present a pretty balanced accounting of the limitations of dialysis while still enjoying life on dialysis. The illustrations in this book are very good.

BIOGRAPHY

Stacy Raye Waibel writes children's stories that star her poodle, Rudy, as the main character. Children of all ages, races, and genders can relate to Rudy.

These stories are informative and educational as well as entertaining and heart-warming. Dealing with such subjects as blindness, going to the doctor, transplants, problem solving, and dialysis, Rudy's stories also include fun and humor so children aren't overwhelmed.

Many of Stacy's stories are written from personal experience. Because of diabetes, she lost her sight at the age of 19 and had her first kidney transplant at 31. In 2009, she needed a second kidney transplant. Her husband Wayne donated one of his kidneys. Even with the many challenges in life, Stacy maintains a positive attitude. She believes that everything happens for a reason.

Stacy graduated magna cum laude with a degree in speech communication and met her husband, Wayne - truly a blessing. They now live in Apple Valley, MN. with Rudy and his little brother, Boomer. Big brothers Kirby, Dito and Dexter, live in heaven.

Oh Mighty Mississippi is a creative and beautifully written story that will fascinate children and nature enthusiasts alike. The artwork is beautiful and Melissa has written it in such a way that you can almost imagine yourself winding along with the Mississippi River on each and every page. I loved how she incorporated many of Minnesota's state symbols into the book, making it not only entertaining, but educational as well. I can't wait to get a copy when it comes out in print! - Joan, Grandmother

Knowing Melissa personally, I was honored to preview a draft of this wonderful book. I am a librarian who has a weakness for illustrated books about Minnesota and this one takes my breath away. Waiting for my published copy has been unbearable but the anticipation will be worth it! -Stephanie, Librarian

Barefoot, Shoefoot - Children's Book

Barefoot, Shoefoot

By Mary Clare Lockman

Barefoot, Shoefoot came from an idea Mary Clare had when she was 21 years old. Years later she brought it to a children’s literature class. Their positive feedback inspired Mary Clare to continue with the story.

She decided to self-publish the book. It was a challenging and interesting learning experience putting the book together from start to finish. She was thrilled to find an illustrator and designer from the Twin Cities and a printing company from Superior, Wisconsin. It was a true local effort.

The book is written in a loose poetic style with strong verbs denoting the action of each image. Colorful pictures and whimsical animals capture the fun of squishing toes through the mud while barefoot, dancing through puddles after a summer storm in rain boots, and many other activities while barefoot or shoefoot.

Repeated phrases and words help children learn to read and make the book a favorite of kindergarten and first grade teachers.

Raising four daughters taught Mary Clare that children really love walking barefoot and wearing different kinds of shoes.

Barefoot or shoefoot, which do you like best?

BIOGRAPHY
Mary Clare’s stories have appeared in three Chicken Soup Books, Grit magazine, and U.S. Navy Cruisers Magazine. She is the self-published author of Warning! Family Vacations May Be Hazardous to Your Health and Barefoot, Shoefoot. Throughout the last five years while promoting the books, she has been interviewed on many radio programs and cable television. She enjoys selling the books at craft fairs because she meets and talks to so many interesting people.

She is currently working on a novel titled, They’re Always With You. Eleven and a half year old Colette is the narrator and catalyst of the story. The question “Who is Daniel” appears on the first page and propels the story events. It is a unique coming of age story as Colette realizes that the adults in her family have many people in their past who will always be part of them. In the process, she also realizes that her grandfather and others will always be part of her.

Mary Clare is a recently retired Oncology/Hospice RN. She also has a BA in Creative Writing. She has been married to Paul for 33 years. They have four daughters, three sons-in-law, and two grandsons.

Barefoot, Shoefoot sells for $8.95 in bookstores and gift shops. At craft fairs, Mary Clare sells it for $5.00. It can be ordered from her through e-mail. mclockman@msn.com

She will be appearing at craft fairs every weekend this fall including Big Lake on November 6th and Duluth Festival of Trees on November 20th and 21st

Environment at Risk Series - Children's Books

Series: Environment at Risk

by Christine Petersen

In Environment at Risk, readers will be led on a journey to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and examine alternative solutions for resolving or preventing them. School Library Journal praised Environment at Risk as “comprehensive” and “valuable,”
recommending the books as part of a “rewarding series [that] provides extensive coverage of compelling environmental issues.”

Controlling Earth’s Pollutants explores the history of pollution, strategies to control it, and the current laws and policies put in place to protect our planet from the effects of pollution.

Earth’s Changing Climate reveals the factors—both natural and human-caused—that influence local and global climate. Delve into the science behind and the history of the phenomenon of climate change, and learn how our actions today can affect future outcomes.

Protecting Earth’s Food Supply

highlights the variety of hazards in our complex modern food chain. Discover how farmers, food companies, and governments address these risks and the measures used to protect the public from them. Renewing Earth’s Waters examines the roles of water in nature and our many uses—and abuses—of it in everyday life. Investigate the policies created to protect water, and begin to consider some of the ways in which we can all contribute to protect this most valuable natural resource.

BIOGRAPHY
I grew up clambering around the tidepools in a small town along the California coast. During after-dinner beach walks, I told my parents rambling stories about creatures I had found in the rocky pools and adventures that had almost become mishaps. Along the way, both nature and narrative became integral to my awareness of the world. This early imprinting led me to explore diverse careers as a bat biologist and middle school teacher before deciding to write full-time. My primary genre is educational non-fiction. I specialize in science and nature, but have also written on a wide variety of social studies and health topics. This year I particularly look forward to visiting schools, libraries, and nature centers, to help students and educators investigate the issues, choices, and solutions presented in the Environment at Risk series.

She can travel inside these paintings to Elsewhere, a place that’s strangely quiet…and eerily familiar. Blake Hoena - Cosmic Bounty Hunter

Cosmic Bounty Hunter

(08/01/10)

Intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo has a new job. The evil aliens Kalibak and Desaad have hired him to capture Superman — dead or alive! When Lobo finally wrangles the Man of Steel, the aliens aren't far behind. But they don't trust the bounty hunter and trap him beneath a force field with Superman. Lobo and the Last Son of Krypton must set aside their difference in order to escape or be imprisoned forever on the distant planet of Arkropolis.

Spotlight Striker

(08/01/10)

Carlos's uncle, a professional soccer player, is in the stands watching Carlos play. Normally, he has nerves of steel and lightning fast reflexes, but playing in front of his super-skilled uncle has Carlos tripping over his own feet. Will he succumb to the pressure or shine in the spotlight?

BIOGRAPHY
Blake A. Hoena grew up in central Wisconsin, where, in his youth, he wrote stories about robots conquering the Moon and trolls lumbering around in the woods behind his parents house, and the fact that the trolls were hunting for little boys had nothing to do with Blake’s pesky, younger brothers. His continuing desire to tell stories led him to Minnesota, where he pursued a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from Minnesota State University, Mankato.

A selection of Blake’s writing won the 2000 Robert Wright Award and his poetry has appeared in several literary journals. He’s also written more than thirty books for children, including graphic novel retellings of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Jack and the Beanstalk, and the Perseus and Medusa myth. Most recently, he’s been working on a series of graphic novels about two space alien brothers, Eek and Ack, who are determined to conquer our big blue home.

OTHER TITLES

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
"Smith’s full-color illustrations and Hoena’s narration rejuvenate the famously spooky legend of the 1800s.”—
School Library Journal

Perseus of Medusa
"A must read for mythology fans!”—Back to Books

Eek and Ack vs the Wolfman
"There’s an underpants scene, vomit, a washing machine spaceship, and two goofy looking aliens. How could kids not love this book?"
The Graphic Classroom

Jack and the Beanstalk
“With just a dash of slapstick humor and the tale’s inherent suspense, this is a grand opportunity to introduce young kids to the graphic format through a story they are already familiar with.”

Swati Avasthi - SPLIT

SPLIT

By Swati Avasthi

Knopf

16-year-old Jace Witherspoon arrives at the doorstep of his estranged brother Christian with a re-landscaped face (courtesy of his father’s fist), $3.84, and a secret.

He tries to move on, going for new friends, a new school, and a new job, but all his changes can’t make him forget what he left behind—his mother, who is still trapped with his dad, and his ex-girlfriend who is keeping his secret. At least so far.

Split is about what happens after. After you’ve said enough, after you’ve run, after you’ve made the split—how do you begin to live again?

BIOGRAPHY
Swati Avasthi has been writing fiction since she read Little House in the Big Woods at age five. Emily Brontë, Harper Lee, and many others furthered her addiction. She institutionalized her habit at the University of Chicago, where she received her B.A. She has received numerous honors, including a Loft’s Mentor Series Award and University of Minnesota’s Marcella DeBourg Fellowship and the Thomas H. Shevlin Fellowship. 2010 will be a big year for her: she will complete her MFA from the University of Minnesota, and Knopf will publish her debut novel, Split, in March.
